Protect Your Identification!

There have been many news stories on TV, the radio and newspapers about identity theft. Even the government is not immune to the problem; the Veteran's Administration has fallen prey to the theft of thousands of records that include personal information of many people who are either serving or have served our country.

Health Choice Generations cares about our members and we do not want Identity Theft to happen to you. To that end, we have compiled a list of tips and resources that may help "Deter, Detect and Defend" against identity theft and/or fraud.

  • First and foremost, you should always keep your Medicare card and Medicare number as safe as you would any of your personal information. You will also want to keep your Health Choice Generations card safe. This will help protect against someone using your information without your knowledge.
  • Protect your Social Security number and don't carry your card in your wallet or write or print your Social Security number on a check. Give out your Social Security number only if necessary or ask for another identifier.
  • Shred financial documents and paperwork with personal information before you discard them.
  • Don't give out personal information on the phone.
  • Never click on links sent in unsolicited e-mail; instead type in a web address you know. Use anti- spy ware/virus software to protect your computer.
  • Don't use an obvious password like your birth date, your mother's maiden name or the last four digits of your Social Security number.
  • Keep an eye on your credit report. Look for any unusual activity such as new accounts opened that you did not open yourself.
  • Review your financial statements for any charges/withdrawals you did not make.
  • Be aware!!
If you suspect you are or have been a victim of identity theft or identity fraud immediately take the following steps:
  • Place a "Fraud Alert" on your credit reports and review the reports carefully.
  • Close any accounts that have been tampered with or established fraudulently.
  • File a police report.
  • Report the theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on-line: www.ftc.gov/idtheft; by phone: 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338) or TTY 1-866-653-4261; or by mail: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580.
